Football federations react to FIFA Council on 48 World Cup teams

Football federations have reacted to FIFA Council’s unanimous decision to expand the World Cup to 48 teams on Tuesday.

CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez was adamant that quality would improve and said the decision was a “win for the world.”

Victor Montagliani, who is the president of North America’s CONCACAF said FIFA needed to evolve and that this decision was bringing the sport into the future.

But the ECA which represents more than 200 European clubs insists the decision was based on “political reasons rather than sporting ones” and taken “under political pressure.”
